How to Tell If a Chihuahua Is Pregnant

Chihuahuas are the smallest of all dog breeds. While small dogs can be cute, things get a bit more complicated once they become pregnant. Since Chihuahuas as a breed have been interbred, problems often arise during pregnancy and birth. For this reason, it is important to detect immediately when your Chihuahua becomes pregnant.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine if your Chihuahua has been around a male dog, or alone outside in the last month or two. If you have an indoor dog that you supervise when you take her outside, you should have a good idea of whether or not there is a chance she is pregnant.

    • 2

Watch your Chihuahua's belly closely to determine if it is growing. This is probably the first sign of pregnancy you will notice. Some Chihuahuas do get a bit of nausea and throw up some in the early weeks. Once you notice a change in your dog's belly, it has probably been about 20 weeks.

    • 3

Take your dog to the vet immediately if you suspect pregnancy. Chihuahuas can have serious difficulties with pregnancy and labor since they are so small. A carefully monitored pregnancy is important for your dog's health.

    • 4

Have the vet palpate your chihuahua's tummy to feel for growing puppies. At around 20 weeks, a vet can feel puppies in the growing uterus. Of course they can also do an ultrasound if it is earlier than 20 weeks, but this costs more money.

    • 5

Monitor your Chihuahua's appetite and teats. If you didn't catch the signs of pregnancy in the early weeks of your dog's pregnancy, your Chihuahua may refuse to eat right before labor. Also, the nipples will leak milk a few days before birth.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't want puppy Chihuahuas, make sure you spay or neuter your dog before it becomes an issue. It is almost guaranteed that a dog will become pregnant if she mates during her heat cycle.

  • Do not attend a Chihuahua's labor and birth without an experienced person involved as Chihuahuas can have difficult labors. In more cases than you might think, death has occurred.
