Step 1
Apply for licensure in your state. Most states require you to have a license before you can sit for the PTA exam. Find out what your state's physical therapy licensure policy is by visiting the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy website (see Resources).

Obtain approval to sit for the PTA exam. You'll need to be approved by the state's physical therapy board to sit for the exam and set up your practice once you pass.

Complete and submit your exam application and registration forms. These should have been provided to you through the board of physical therapy in your state after graduation.

Submit your paperwork to the state board office. This organization will need to review your application and verify your school before allowing you to take the exam.

Register online to sit for the PTA exam. Online exam registration can be completed through the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy website.

Wait for your Authorization to Test (ATT) letter in the mail. After completing the registration process and paying the necessary fees, the board will review your application and send you the ATT letter to confirm eligibility.

Make your appointment at the nearest Sylvan (Prometric) test site. You have 60 days after receiving your Authorization to Test Letter to schedule your exam date. Consult the Prometric website to find the location nearest you.

Schedule your appointment. You'll need to complete an appointment application and confirm your appointment to reserve your seat. This can be completed via phone, e-mail or online.
