How to Sell Jewelry on Ebay

Jewelry is generally a challenging item to sell because photographing it is usually difficult. Because of the metallic nature of most jewelry, it is highly reflective and resists simple photography techniques. Once the hard work of photographing the item is done, however, the item can be easily listed on eBay.

Instructions

    • 1

Create an eBay account (see Resources) To sell on eBay you will have to list a credit card with the site, come up with a unique seller ID and give the site your current email address. You will then be sent an email to confirm your address. Click on the link that is sent to you and your account will be set up.

    • 2

Go to any eBay page and then to the Sell tab at the top of the page. This will take you to a simple two-page template for selling the item.

    • 3

Enter a title and a description of your jewelry. The title should be a list of words that will best describe your piece. Rather than using words like “pretty” or “shiny,” use words that people will be searching for. Search words include the kind of metal or stone that your piece is made from and the kind of jewelry it is. The description should expand on this idea. Include the dimensions of the item, its materials and its age if you know it. Also include what kind of condition it is in and any damage it has suffered.

    • 4

Take a picture of your jewelry piece. For many people, this is the most difficult part of listing jewelry. Use a digital camera that has a macro feature if you can. If not, experiment with how far back you can stand from the item and still get a detailed picture. You may need to go outside to take advantage of sunlight. Putting artificial lights close to the items will likely cause a reflection that will make the piece invisible to the camera. Using a flash too closely to the item will have a similar effect. It may take several attempts to get a picture that is both detailed and well lit.

Choose a price for the item. Choose one that is comparable to other, similar jewelry pieces. You can check these on eBay by searching for a similar item in the live listings or going to the Completed Listings link on the left side of the main search page.

    • 6

Enter the picture in the picture box and go to the next screen to continue the listing. This will give you the shipping and return options. You can choose any types of payment options you want to accept by checking the applicable boxes. The return policy can be left blank, or you can type in your own personal policy on returns.

    • 7

Submit the listing and wait for sales. When the item sells, you will get an email with the seller’s ID name and the price of the item. Once the buyer pays by the method you specified, ship the item to the address the seller gives you. If they pay by PayPal, their mailing address will be sent to you. If not, you can ask for an address or look for it on the envelope of a mailed payment.
