The Double Bowline
The Double Bowline

The double bowline is most often used for climbing, as is a tie-in knot. It is tied to the climber's harness, usually in place of the more standard figure eight. It is a relatively simple knot to tie, but isn't quite as strong as the figure eight. However, it is still relatively reliable, especially when used in conjunction with a stopper knot. Certainly stronger than the standard bowline knot, the Double Bowline is a good knot to use if you tend to put a lot of strain on your knot while climbing. Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rope
  • Harness, hitch or something else to tie to
  1. Step 1

Make two loops with your rope, one on top of the other. If you are using this knot for climbing purposes, thread the end of your rope through your harness, and let it hang down around your shin.

  2. Step 2

Pull the end of the rope up through the holes you've made in the rope, and place the end beneath the main line, as shown in the picture.

  3. Step 3

Wrap the end of the rope around the main line and bring it down through the loops, as shown.

  4. Step 4

Pull the end of the rope up, over and through the uppermost loop on the right-hand side, as shown.

  5. Step 5

Add a stopper knot to make sure your double bowline knot is secure (this is optional). To tie a stopper knot, form a loop with the remaining rope. Form a second loop behind the first. Next, pass the end back through both of these loops and pull tight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have your climbing partner inspect your double bowline knot before leaving the ground.
  • The double bowline knot is not as strong as the figure eight.
  • The double bowline is susceptible to slippage. You may want to use a stopper knot to ensure security.
