How to Recognize and Treat Elbow Dysplasia in Dogs

When your dog is growing, sometimes the joint doesn’t develop correctly causing elbow dysplasia. Experts don’t know exactly what causes this health problem, but certain breeds such as German Shepards, Golden Retrievers and Rottweilers are much more prone to this joint problem. Symptoms usually crop up by the time your dog turns a year old.

Instructions

1. Observe your dog and log the animal's symptoms. Symptoms of elbow dysplasia in dogs include difficulty walking on front legs and stiffness after lying down for a while.

2. Schedule an appointment with your vet. The vet will examine your dog’s range of elbow motion, conduct a physical exam and take radiographs of your canine.

3. Ask about anti-inflammatory medications. Your vet may prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication that should provide relief to your canine.

4. Engage your dog in mild exercise. While taking a long walk or hike may be too hard for your canine, mild exercise can be good. If your dog is overweight, this will allow him to shed the extra pounds and put less pressure on the elbow.

5. Surgery may be needed for dogs that are experiencing a lot of pain. This can improve your dog’s function as well as provide pain relief.

Tips & Warnings

• Restrict exercise after surgery for at least a month.

• Some believe that puppy food that is too high in protein may contribute to the development of elbow dysplasia. Ask your vet to recommend a food that is lower in protein while still providing the essential nutrients for a growing puppy.
