How to Choose a Shade of Blush

One makeup problem that some women have is choosing the right shade of blush. Because the choice depends on your own specific skin tone, each person must evaluate themselves and decide accordingly. These tips will help out any woman who needs to know how to choose a shade of blush. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a shade of blush that matches the natural color of your lips. It does not matter if your lips are a light shade of peach or a dark shade of red. As long as the shade of blush matches your natural lip color, it will be sure to complement your skin tone as well.

    • 2

Select a natural shade of blush. Most skin tones are not complemented by red or dark pink blush. Lighter shades of pink, peach and beige are usually the best options. Be sure to think about what natural blush shades your skin tone will look the best with.

    • 3

Hold up a container of blush to your arm. See if the color complements your skin tone. Keep in mind that your face is probably about two shades lighter. If you have a compact mirror or are able to find one in the store, you may want to consider checking that way.

    • 4

Experiment with different blush textures before you decide on one. Although you may not even realize it, the texture of the blush can have a huge effect on what the shade looks like on the skin. A pale pink in a powder form of blush may look decent, but it may look so much better in a cream form.

    • 5

Be sure to choose a blush shade that is lighter than your skin tone. A darker blush shade will give your skin a pasty, fake appearance. The only time when it may be acceptable to opt for darker blush is if you have very fair skin. People with very fair skin should try to choose very light shades of blush.

    • 6

Try different blush application techniques. The heavier you apply the blush, the darker it will appear. Depending on your own skin tone, you may be able to use the same shade of blush in winter when you are lighter as well as in summer when you are more likely to get tan.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider going to a cosmetology school or a department store where students or employees can help you choose the right shade of blush.

  • Avoid matching your eye shadow to your blush.

  • Keep in mind that you should still choose natural shades of blush for a special event.

  • Don’t just choose a blush because you like the shade. Choose it because it complements your skin tone.

  • If a shade of blush seems way too light, dark or bright, it probably is.

I've never worn blush because I have no idea how to do it and the few times I tried I got that "crazy grandma" look...lol I always admire it on people who know what they're doing, so maybe it's time to give it another try :-)
