How to Remake a Jacket's Lining
Wearing a favorite jacket can be a daily habit. Unfortunately, it can also lead to wearing out the jacket's lining. You can remake your jacket's lining and hang onto that favorite for a while longer. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 1 to 2 yards lightweight fabric (such as rayon satin)
- Needle and thread
- Pins
- Scissors
- Seam ripper
- Sewing pen or pencil
- Sewing machine
Instructions
-
Removing the Old Jacket Lining
-
1
Remove the old lining carefully, using a seam ripper. Make sure that you keep all parts of the lining as intact as possible. Damaging the old lining will make remaking the lining much more difficult.
-
2
Start at the bottom of the jacket and unstitch the area where the lining attaches to the jacket. Take special care to not damage your jacket in the process.
-
-
3
Unstitch the jacket sleeves, the collar area and the front sides of the lining.
-
4
Seam-rip the stitched lining pieces from one another. Each lining piece should be carefully separated and saved. The old lining will be the pattern to follow for remaking your jacket's lining.
Making the New Jacket Lining
-
5
Place the old lining pieces onto your prepared fabric and pin them down. Make sure that the side of the fabric that you want to be seen is laid the same way as the old lining piece.
-
6
Cut out each separate lining piece. Make sure that your cuts are very straight and that each new lining piece is exactly the same as the old lining pieces.
-
7
Trim away any unevenly cut edges of the new lining pieces and unpin them from the old lining pattern.
-
8
Pin the seams of each sleeve of the new lining together with the opposite side of the sleeve. Make sure that the seam allowance for each sleeve faces outward and that the visible side of the fabric is underneath.
-
9
Sew the back portion of the lining to the two front lining pieces. Make sure that fabric is facing the correct position for the jacket.
-
10
Sew the sides of the sleeves together. Make sure that each sleeve end matches up with the opposite side of the sleeve. Make sure that the stitches line up the same as in the original pieces; otherwise, your lining could end up either too big or too small for the jacket sleeves.
-
11
Pin and sew the lining sleeves to the back and front portions of the lining.
Attaching the Jacket Lining
-
12
Iron the seams of the finished lining open and flat. Also iron the edge of the sewn lining under to make a seam allowance for stitching it into the jacket. The exterior seams of the lining are the sleeve ends, the collar and front portions and the back bottom portion of the lining.
-
13
Pull the jacket inside out.
-
14
Set the lining into the jacket, with the lining inside out. Make sure that the lining fits appropriately in the jacket and make any necessary adjustments before trying to attach it.
-
15
Hand-stitch the lining to the jacket in the same location as the old lining was. Slip-stitch the lining instead of top-stitching it so that the stitches do not show.
-
16
Finish sewing each section with a secure knot and run the thread through once more before cutting to conceal the end of the thread.
