ask your boss for a raise

Is it time for a raise but you don't know how to approach your boss? Have you taken on more work and responsibility without an increase in pay? Read below for tips on how to ask your boss for a raise.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Before asking for a raise, do your homework. Begin by reviewing your job description and comparing your salary to others in the same field. (Many times salary information can be found on websites like salary.com and monster.com)

  2. Step 2

Make a list of what you have accomplished over the past few months. Highlight projects you have completed as well as occasions when you have gone above and beyond what the job entails.

  3. Step 3

Set up an appointment with your boss to review your performance and salary expectations. Try not to schedule your meeting on a Monday or Friday when your boss is usually busiest.

  4. Step 4

Leave room for negotiation. Ask for an amount slightly higher than what you would be happy with and try to settle on a happy median.

  5. Step 5

After the meeting, follow up with a thank you letter reiterating your agreement.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never threaten to leave your job unless you are fully prepared to walk out.
  • Do not compare your salary to what the person in the next cubicle is making.
  • Do not act unprofessional or raise your voice.
  • And finally, do not ask for a raise unless you have done something to deserve it!
