Clarinets are sold with a few standard accessories. There are many more to choose that will improve playing and make your clarinet experience more enjoyable.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a clarinet or someone who plays clarinet
  • internet access or a music store
  1. Step 1
    Plasstic folding clarinet rest.

Keep your instrument from hitting the ground with an instrument stand. This avoids the clarinet rolling off of a flat surface like a chair seat.
They are mad in plastic, metal, and wood with a price range of $10 - $30. Most fold up small enough to fit in the clarinet case.

  2. Step 2
    Various Reed Cases
    Various Reed Cases

Reeds are the sound generator of the clarinet. Once you have one broken in and playing well, protect it with a reed case. These are hard cases holding 4-6 reeds made of hard plastic or metal. Many brands include the ability to maintain the proper humidity.

  3. Step 3
    Reed Trimmer

All reeds need adjusting, especially when they develop a chip or split. Reed cutters are made to precisely trim the reed edge. This removes the damaged portion and allows you to continue using the reed.

  4. Step 4

For beginners or when playing long sets, the player's right thumb gets sore because the weight of the instrument is carried by the right thumb alone. One solution is a thumb rest protector or guard. Instead of the factory metal rest digging into the thumb, thumb guards act like a cushion to increase the comfort of playing.

  5. Step 5
    Clarinet neck strap

Another solution to reduce pressure on the thumb is a neck strap. Used for years by saxophonists, there are now clarinet neck straps. They attach to the thumb rest and are adjustable.

  6. Step 6
    Clarinet swabs

Moisture is a clarinet's enemy when stored in the case. It especially damages the key pads. Use a cloth swab after each use. New to the market are microfiber swabs that are meant to be left in the instrument when stored.

  7. Step 7
    Microphone for clarinet

To enhance your live performance, amplify your clarinet. The newest models, using a small microphone attached to the clarinet's bell, are wireless.

  8. Step 8
    Adjustable barrel for tuning

Staying in tune is a challenge for clarinet players. Changes in temperature, humidity and the player's ability are all factors. Tuning is usually done by opening or closing the joint between barrels. If you consistently have to do this, use tuning rings which fit between the barrel joint or use an adjustable barrel.
