Install An In-Line Cord Switch
Install An In-Line Cord Switch

Sometimes it is more convenient to turn on a switch than it is to reach under the light shade and switch on the light. Here are simple directions on how to install a switch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lamp or other appliance
  • Pocketknife
  • Wire cutters
  • Switch
  • Screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Determine what type of switch you will need. You can do this by reading the tiny print on the cord. SPT-1 or SPT-2?

  2. Step 2

After you have obtained the right switch, unplug the electrical appliance.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the cord has a polarized plug. A polarized plug has one prong wider than the other so you can only insert it one way into an outlet.

  4. Step 4

Use a knife to make a 3/4-in. slit at the desired switch location. Don't cut into the individual wire sheathing.

  5. Step 5

Cut the smooth (non-identified) wire apart in the center of the split.

  6. Step 6

Put the cord into the wire channel on the switch bottom. Place the switch halves together and tighten the switch screw with a screwdriver.

Tips & Warnings
  • Caution: Unplug the lamp before beginning repair.
  • Make sure you cut the non-identified (hot) wire only. Itls the one without any indentations or ribbing.
