Tornadoes are nature's most violent storms. With a little knowledge and preparation, you can be ready...

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your wits and a plan.
  1. Step 1

First, purchase a weather alert radio. You stand a much better chance of survival if you are warned in advance of potential danger. A good weather radio has the ability to sound an alarm when warnings are issued in your area, even if you're not listening to the radio at the time. You will be warned of all sorts of possible disasters, not just weather related.

  2. Step 2

There are many good choices for weather radios, but it can be hard to know what features to look for. The First Alert Public Alert Radio with S.A.M.E has many of the recommended features. You can buy it at Amazon.com, and various other online stores, between $30 and $40.

  3. Step 3

Never try to outrun a tornado. Follow the guidelines below, based on your location.

  4. Step 4

If you are in a house or other permanent structure: Go to the lowest room in the center of the building, and stay there. Stay away from windows, and leave them closed. If needed, you can get under a solid piece of furniture and lie with your hands covering her head, face down.

  5. Step 5

If you're in a mobile home or travel trailer: Get out! Go to the lowest level of a permanent structure or storm shelter. Is no shelter is available, follow the instructions for being out in the open.

  6. Step 6

If you are out in the open: Lie face down in a depression or ditch, with your hands covering your head. Be aware of possible flooding or flying debris. Do not try to outrun the tornado, tornadoes don't last long, and you are much safer lying down.
