Sensitive teeth is a common condition that affects many people. Sharp pain resulting from hot or cold drinks, cold air, sweets, etc. that feels as if it goes straight to the bone. Enough pain to bring a man to his knees. Here are some ways to help reduce sensitivity at home, though I suggest you visit your dentist to rule out gum disease or other conditions that could be the root of the problem.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soft bristle toothbrush
  • Toothpaste for sensitive teeth
  • Fluoride rinse
  • Dental floss
  • Regular dental check-ups
  1. Step 1

Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing every time you eat would be better but at least twice a day should be habit. By the way, you are not stripping a floor when you brush. Use light strokes with your soft bristle toothbrush. Those times that you cannot brush, at least give it a good rinse and spit.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you are using a soft bristle toothbrush. Your toothpaste is just as important. You can buy toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth, just make sure it has fluoride in it. Avoid using whitening toothpaste and products when you are having a lot of problems with sensitivity.

  3. Step 3

Make sure you floss. Flossing should be part of every one's dental hygiene routine but especially for those with sensitive teeth. Since sensitivity can be caused by plaque build-up, gingivitis, and other periodontal diseases all of which can be reduced or prevented by flossing, it is one of the best ways to combat sensitivity.

  4. Step 4

    Using mouth wash.

Here it gets tricky. Finding the right mouth wash is crucial. Many mouth washes are too acidic which can contribute to your problem. Look for those with added fluoride and no alcohol. If you insist on using the one you have always used, rinse with water to neutralize as much of the acid as you can.

  5. Step 5

Watch the foods you eat. Just like with dieting, many of the foods you eat are causing you problems. What is adding pounds to your rear end is also wreaking havoc on your teeth. Since I am not in any position to fuss at you about what you put in your mouth, let me just refer you back to step one. If you eat it, brush afterwards!

  6. Step 6

Go to the dentist. Your dentist is your next best defense with tooth problems besides oral hygiene. I know many cannot afford trips to the dentist but find a way to do it. If you put it off, it is going to end up costing you a lot more in the long run.

Tips & Warnings
  • Brush regularly. Sample different types of toothpaste to find one that helps with sensitivity. Use warm water to rinse if cold causes pain.
  • Avoid using whitening products all the time. Make sure to follow directions when you do use them.
