Sew a Pillowcase
Sew a Pillowcase

I will show you how to quickly and inexpensively make a pillowcase out of muslin. Once you have mastered sewing a muslin pillowcase, you can move on to making matching cases out of whatever fabric you please.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 yard 45" muslin
  • sewing machine
  • serger (optional - not required)
  • thread
  • iron & ironing board
  1. Step 1

Keep your muslin folded in half lengthwise. Measure 20 inches from the fold and cut parallel to the fold.

  2. Step 2

Open up your fabric and finish one 40" end. You can finish this edge with a serger or by sewing a narrow hem with a sewing machine.

  3. Step 3

Fold the fabric lengthwise and sew along the two unfinished edges. I use a half-inch seam allowance. I also use a serger but a sewing machine would work fine --- just be sure to finish your edges.

  4. Step 4

Fold up your open end (the end that you finished in step 2) to give a 4" hem.

  5. Step 5

Sew your hem in place. If using a straight stitch, it doesn't matter which side you sew your hem from. I used a decorative stitch so I had to turn my pillowcase right-side out.

  6. Step 6

Snip threads and give your pillowcase a final ironing and you are done!

Tips & Warnings
  • Always prewash your fabric before sewing.
