Things You'll Need:
- Patience
- Careful Thought
- Common Sense

Step 1
Not all dogs are low-maintenanceLong-haired, short-haired, or in-between? Deciding on the type of coat that you would be most happy for your new dog to have should be of great importance to you. Many dogs have coats that are virtually maintenance-free - requiring nothing more than the occasional bath - Boxers, Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, e.t.c. Then there are other breeds with longer, more dense coats that require constant brushing and bathing and expensive trips to the groomer - various Retrievers, Spaniels, and smaller show dogs such as Poodles and Pomeranians.

Step 2
All dogs need adequate space in which to roamTake your house/yard size into account. Large dogs generally need large spaces in which to romp around in; small dogs can be satisfied with smaller areas. Selecting a dog breed whose size matches the area to which it will spend most of its time is crucial! There's nothing more destructive and cruel than a large, rambunctious dog confined to a tiny living space!

Step 3
Do you want an active, energetic dog? What types of activities do you plan on participating in with your dog? Are you a highly active person who plans to spend hours each week jogging, hiking, or running with your dog? Or, are you a person who fancies a more pedestrian and leisurely existence and covets a dog breed who will be happy lounging by your feet all day? Greyhounds and Labrador Retrievers would be miserable leading a sedentary existence; Pugs and Poodles would be happy with the occasional walk around the neighborhood!
