Creating an effective home office is an essential component of any successful home business. Without the proper supplies, location and organization, your business can and will suffer. Take the time to plan a home office before you venture into the world of working from home. A properly outfitted office can help you to work more efficiently, increase your working comfort and maintain your motivation.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Desk
  • Computer
  • Computer Chairs
  • Printer
  • Telephone
  • Lamps/Lighting
  • Writing Supplies
  • Office Paper Products
  • Calendar
  1. Step 1

Determine the best location in your house for your home office. If at all possible, you should dedicate an entire room to your home office. Placing a desk and computer in the corner of a room will only succeed in providing you with too little room and too many distractions to work efficiently. Instead, place your desk in a location where you can move about freely and that offers a level of comfort.

  2. Step 2

Go shopping for office furniture and supplies. Before leaving for your shopping day, you should make a list of all furniture, office equipment and supplies that you will need on a daily basis. Almost any home office will need a desk, desk chair, computer, printer, telephone, general office supplies and some type of filing system.

  3. Step 3

After you have purchased your office items, you will need to determine the best layout for your office. Maximize space and productivity when setting up your office. Place your computer near a window for some natural lighting before arranging any other lights. Place your desk and chair in such a way that you will have a clear walk space in your office.

  4. Step 4

Organize your office from day one. Filing cabinets provide an effective way to organize and access important business files. A large desk calendar will help you to have important dates at hand. Always keep note paper, writing utensils and a stapler on your desk for easy access.

  5. Step 5

Add a computer and printer to your work desk. Set up Internet access while maintaining an account for business that is separate from your personal or family account. Install a telephone with voice mail or an answering machine in your office. This phone service should also be for business use only.

  6. Step 6

Add a few personal touches to your office. You are more likely to be productive in your office space when you are surrounded by items of interest or sentimental value. However, try not clutter your desk or office area in the process.

Tips & Warnings
  • When shopping for your computer chair, keep in mind that comfort and function are more important than appearance. Try out several different office chairs before making a purchase.
  • Remain flexible in terms of your home office. A style that works today might not be as effective somewhere down the line. Adapt your office to meet the changing needs of your business.
