How to Organize Images in iPhoto

iPhoto is an Apple software application and part of their iLife suite. iLife comes with all new Macs. iPhoto is similar to most other photo software, like Google Picasa and Adobe Photoshop Album. If you're familiar with any of those software applications, transitioning to iPhoto won't be difficult. Creating albums is one way to organize photos. You can also add keywords and ratings. iPhoto allows you to sort photos by date, keyword, title, rating or manually.

Things You'll Need:

  • iPhoto
  • Digital photos

    Organize Photos by Creating a New Album

  1. Step 1

    Start iPhoto. Select "File," then "New Album.'

  2. Step 2

    Type in a description, and click "Create."

  3. Step 3

    Open "Library," then drag and drop photos from your library to the new album.

  4. Step 4

    Drag and drop to organize photos within the album.

  5. Step 5

    Add titles to further organize photos within an album.

  6. Step 6

    Click "View," then "Sort Photos."

  7. Step 7

    Select "Sort Photos by Title" to view your photos organized by the titles you gave them.

  8. Organize Photos Using Keywords

  9. Step 1

    Click iPhoto, then "Preferences."

  10. Step 2

    Select the "Keywords" tab, then click "+." This will show "untitled" as a new keyword.

  11. Step 3

    Click "untitled," and type in your desired keyword (for example: Mom).

  12. Step 4

    Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to add as many keywords as you need. Close menu when you're done adding new keywords.

  13. Step 5

    Ctrl+click on a photo. A menu will appear.

  14. Step 6

    Select "Show Info."

  15. Step 7

    Select the "Keywords" tab. You will see a list of all the keywords you added.

  16. Step 8

    Click the boxes next to each keyword you would like to add to that photo.

  17. Step 9

    Click "View," then "Keywords" to show your selected keywords beneath your photos.

  18. Step 10

    Go to "Search" on the bottom right. Type a keyword. This will show all your photos tagged with that keyword.

  19. Step 11

    Click the key on bottom left. This brings up a menu of all keywords. You can select one or multiple to view photos tagged with those keywords.

  20. Organize Photos Using Ratings

  21. Step 1

    Select a photo.

  22. Step 2

    Click "Photos" menu, then "My Ratings."

  23. Step 3

    Click one to five stars to rate that photo.

  24. Step 4

    Select a photo. Open "Infopane," then click rating. This will also add a rating to your photo.

  25. Step 5

    To rate many photos quickly, click a photo. Hold down command, then press a number one through five.

  26. Step 6

    Click "View," then "Sort Photos." Select "Sort Photos by Rating." This will show the rating beneath your photos.

  28. Step 1

    Click "View."

  29. Step 2

    Select "Sort Photos," then click "Manually."

  30. Step 3

    Arrange the order of your photos by dragging and dropping them.

Tips & Warnings
  • The iLife website has good information on other things iPhoto can do.
  • If you're totally new to photo software, iPhoto has a minimal editing component that is great for beginners.
