Most accomplished table-tennis players have mastered the forehand slam. But it is quite an advantage to have a consistent, deadly backhand slam as well. Since it is generally a less natural shot, it is more difficult to achieve. There are several basic elements to developing an effective backhand slam.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ping-pong table
  • Paddles
  1. Step 1

Remember that any slam in table tennis requires lower\-arm strength and a quick wrist. Keep your elbow bent to prevent your whole arm from becoming involved in the shot. You don't want to slow down the paddle movement.

  2. Step 2

Wait for the ball. Anxiousness is a sure-fire way to blow the shot. Try to hit the ball at its peak to ensure the most advantageous angle.

  3. Step 3
Prepare to step forward into that backhand slam.

Lead with your elbow. Snap your lower arm and wrist into the ball while stepping forward toward the table. Body momentum is critical to maximizing the speed of your shot.

  4. Step 4

Use topspin, particularly when striking the ball at a level close to the table. Topspin allows you to raise the ball over the net, then bring it down to the other end of the table. It also creates a strong hop when the ball lands, making it tougher to return.

  5. Step 5

Finish your stroke high. Don't follow through low, because that will keep the ball too low to clear the net.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stay on your toes, because that will allow you to strike through the ball. Don't hit flat-footed.
  • Table tennis can be a frustrating game. Don't kick the table or fire the paddle at your opponent when you miss your shot. Nobody is supposed to get hurt playing table tennis!
