How To Speed Read.

Reading is a part of everyday life. Sometimes we want to sit down and enjoy what we are reading and sometimes we are just looking for some quick information. Speed reading is a great skill to have to read through lots of material to find the information your after. Learn the beginnings on learning how to speed read below.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Reading material (start of with material you have already read, then move to new material.)
Step1
To get reading to speed read you must get rid of distractions around you. Put on ear plugs if needed. Turn off the TV or radio.
Step2
Sit in a well lighted area with comfortable seating and put your reading material out to start reading.
Step3
Start reading as normal. Pay attention to how often you reread a sentence, or if you move your lips while you talk.
Step4
Read the next paragraph and pay special attention not move your lips or reread what you have already read. This takes practice but with patience it will increase your reading speed greatly.
Step5
The next step in learning to speed read is to learn not to read every word. You will want to read by sentence or a block of words. While this method is effective in getting a general idea of what the subject matter is it can decrease the comprehension rate. So for this purpose it is best used when searching for information or trying to cover huge If amounts of material in a short amount of time. If you have trouble learning this step gradually increase the words you read at a time. For instance read two words at a time then start reading by threes. Many speed readers can read up to a paragraph at a time.
Step6
Practice, practice, practice. Speed reading is a highly useful skill that can reap many rewards but usually will not be mastered without practice and determination.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keeping your place with your hand or a sheet of paper may increase your ability to keep your place. In turn this will increase your speed.
  • To see find out where your reading speed is at this point you many time your self with a stop watch or take a free online reading test. Tests can be found by typing in free speed reading test to almost any search engine.
  • Redo test every so often to see how your reading speed is progressing.
  • If you have problems reading at a fast pace visit your eye doctor. Many individuals find out that reading problems have significant relation to sight problems.
