First and foremost, don't take it personally. A majority of the time, the individual who is being rude to you is not making some kind of direct attack. Instead, that person may just be having a bad day or is impolite or inconsiderate in general. This is, of course, not an excuse for their behavior. However, there is no reason for you to take their actions personally as this will cause you unnecessary grief.

    • 2

Try to remain calm and indifferent to rude behavior and stay focused on what you are doing. When someone is rude to us, it's easy to become angry or hurt by an inconsiderate person's actions. However, if you let your anger get the best of you, you may find yourself in a heated situation that can result in negative strain or even physical violence.

If an incident occurs where some random person whom you may never see again is rude to you, it is best to just ignore the negative actions or walk away. As stated earlier, if you let your anger get the best of you, you may find yourself in a situation you don't want to be in.

    • 4

If you know someone is deliberately trying to insult you (sometimes it can be pretty obvious), then a good rule of thumb is to not let that person know their actions are affecting you. Keep smiling, keep laughing, and kill them with kindness! This, of course, is only really useful in situations where you will either rarely or probably never see the rude individual again.

    • 5

If the rude individual is someone that you see on a regular basis, address their behavior with them. Politely explain to them that you find some of the things that they say and do towards you to be offensive. It's possible that the person may not even realize that their treatment of you is inconsiderate, so talking to that person about it may put an end to it.

    • 6

If the rude individual doesn't put an end to their ways, then alter your response and relationship with that person. Avoid contact with him/her and do your best to ignore their discourteous behavior when in situations where you can't avoid the person. If the individual is a co-worker whom you have to see every day, consider addressing the issue with a supervisor.

    • 7

If the rude individual is someone who you have contacted in an effort to seek customer service (i.e., your cable company), politely explain to them that you feel their behavior is inappropriate. If that person refuses to alter his/her behavior, then request to speak to a different representative or a supervisor.
