In this article you'll learn how to prepare and serve authentic warm Turkish-style hummus step-by-step with ingredients you can find at your local grocery store!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 large can Garbanzo Beans (chick peas)
  • 1 small jar Tahini (sesame paste)
  • 1 - 3 large garlic cloves (depending on taste)
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 4 Tbsp. water
  • 2 tsp. cumin powder
  • salt & pepper, to taste
  • 2 Tbsp. butter, melted
  • 2-3 strips of beef bacon
  • 1 package Pita or flat bread
  • a wide, shallow, microwaveable serving bowl
  • a food processor
  1. Step 1
Choose a brand of canned garbanzo beans that are soft and plump.

Set up your food processor to make puree. Drain and rinse your Garbanzo beans and put them in your food processor along with the lemon juice, water and garlic cloves. Pulse on high speed until you have a slightly grainy puree. If it seems too dry, add more water as needed.

  2. Step 2
Tahini, or sesame paste, can be found in the ethnic or organic sections of your local grocery store or at any health food market.

Add the jar of tahini, including any oil sitting on top, and the spices. Pulse on high until you have a homogenous mix. Again, if the mixture seems too dry, add a little more water as needed.

  3. Step 3
Lemon juice complements the strong flavors and gives the mixture a lift.

Fry up your all-beef bacon strips until crispy, them crumble them with your fingers. Melt the butter. Empty the hummus into your serving dish sculpting a nice peak in the middle and microwave until heated through.

  4. Step 4
Cut your Pita or flat bread in wedges and arrange around your bowl of hummus to serve.

Sprinkle the crumbled bacon over the top and drizzle with the warm melted butter. Serve your hummus warm along with wedges of Pita or flat bread.

Tips & Warnings
  • Making good hummus takes practice. Experiment with different ratios of garbanzo beans vs. tahini, garlic and spices to see what your taste buds prefer! There is no standard measurement, so have fun! I always find that 1 part tahini with 2 parts garbanzo beans works best. And usually 1 or 2 cloves of garlic go a long way. Serving your hummus warm will be a surprise for your guests, and a real conversation piece. You'll find that everyone will want the recipe! If you prefer your hummus cold, this recipe still stands, just eliminate the butter and crumbled bacon and serve it room temperature garnished with paprika and cumin. Enjoy!
