Things You'll Need:
- Timers for lights
- Neighbor or friend to help while you're gone
-
Step 1
Make a list "to do" of all the things that have to be done before you leave for your trip, and another list of everything you need to pack.
-
Step 2
Put your itinerary, contact numbers, maps, tickets, and other important documents all together in one folder, and put in an easy-to-remember place. Don't forget the chargers for your phone, PDA, and other electronic devices.
-
Step 3
Arrange for a friend or neighbor to check in on your house and care for your pets and plants while you're away. Give them a spare key and the code to your security system, if needed. Make sure they have your itinerary and contact number, and can get a hold of you in an emergency.
-
Step 4
Put your mail on hold for the days that you'll be gone, and have a neighbor pick up your newspaper. You don't want to advertise to burglars that you're not home.
-
Step 5
Put your lights on timers to go and off at different times during the night, and make sure all your windows and doors are closed and locked. Make sure any important documents with personal information (bills, pay stubs, etc) are safely put away in a locked cabinet or safe.
-
Step 6
Clean your bathroom and kitchen, and empty all trash cans before you leave. A wet washcloth or sink full of dirty dishes can grow mold and mildew and stink up your house while you're gone. The last thing you want is to come home to a smelly mess to clean up.

on 8/31/2008 This is excellent information on packing for a trip. I keep a checklist and revise and update it before each journey. I'll add things that I forgot last time... it's a work in progress.

on 8/26/2008 Hah! Are you ever organized. These are things we almost never do...and always regret not doing them. Think I'll have to post this one on the fridge.
