Planting up a window box is a cheap and easy way to enjoy garden colour all year round.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Window Box or Planter
  • Crocks (broken plant pots or smashed crockery)
  • Multipurpose compost
  • Moisture retaining granules or vermiculite
  • Plants!
  1. Step 1

Once you have chosen your planter or windowbox, line it with crocks to improve drainage.

  2. Step 2

Next, add a couple of inches of multipurpose compost to your container. Mix a couple of handfuls of vermiculite or moisture retaining granules through the compost and you are ready to plant.

  3. Step 3

Choose 3-5 plants with contrasting flower and leaf shapes - but with complementary colouring.

I like to use 1 or 2 foliage plants (e.g. salvia officianalis, Helichrysum or heuchera)

1 x trailing plant (e.g. lobelia, petunia, verbena, antirrhinum)

1 x dominant bloom (e.g. viola, pelargonium, wallflower, salvia, colchium)

1 x filler plant (e.g. nemesia, calamintha, cyclamen)

  4. Step 4

Once you have arranged the plants to your liking, with their leaves touching, simply fill in the gaps between the roots with more compost and firm down. Then give it all a good deep watering, and sit back and enjoy....
