Things You'll Need:
- Proper sized kennel for your dog.
- Patience

Step 1
Be sure you have the proper sized kennel for your dog. If you have a larger breed and don't want to go to the expense of buying a different size as he/she grows one way to compensate is put a cardboard piece to make the larger kennel smaller.
This will help avoid potty accidents while you are potty training, because dog's ordinarily will not go where they sleep. -
Step 2
Put your kennel in a part of your house that the family spends a lot of time in. Ours is right in the living room. Leave the door open so your puppy has the opportunity to investigate without the door being closed.
You can also put a pillow or blanket in the kennel to make it comfortable for your puppy. Also a piece of clothing from a family member helps so he/she has that scent in her kennel along with their own. -
Step 3
Teach your dog a command from the start. For example, we say kennel up, and our dog will go right to her kennel. But it took lots of time for Willow to learn what was expected of her when we spoke this command.
-
Step 4
Always use your command phrase and kennel your puppy when you go away for a while. This also keeps your puppy safe from harm while you are gone. For instance, our lab liked chewing on electrical cords, she was safe from this in her kennel while we were away. If possible start with short periods of time so your puppy knows you will come back home to her. Some people also kennel at night until the puppy is totally potty trained. We didn't need to do this, however.
