Things You'll Need:
- Live chipmunk traps (mesh wire)
- Peanut butter
- Sunflower seeds
- Some patience
-
Step 1
Purchase some mesh wire live chipmunk traps. These can be easily found online through a Google search, or you can sometimes find them at your local hardware store or home improvement store.
-
Step 2
Mix the sunflower seeds with the peanut butter to create an effective bait. The main reason for using peanut butter is so that it can stay put on the trap's trigger, and won't easily slip off.
-
Step 3
For the first two or three days, let the chipmunks go in and out of the traps as they please, to freely eat of the peanut-butter-and-sunflower bounty that has been laid before them. During this phase, do NOT set the triggers on your traps.
-
Step 4
Once you can confirm that they are regularly eating from the traps and are basically accustomed to going inside the traps to eat, then begin to set the triggers. Check the traps on a regular basis.
-
Step 5
Once the chipmunk is trapped, cover the trap with a blanket or sheet of some kind to keep the chipmunk from completely freaking out due to being totally removed from its normal environment.
-
Step 6
Take them to your local wildlife park, or some type of very natural surrounding...any patch of forest will do, just as long as it's not part of someone's backyard. Obtain permission to let the chipmunks go free if permission is required.
