How to Turn off Windows XP System Restore

It may be necessary to turn off system restore on occasion such as when your running a specific virus or trojan removal tool.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    From your Start button, go to 'My Computer'.

  2. Step 2

    Do not click on the My Computer link but rather right click while your mouse is on it. Choose 'Properties' from the list that appears.

  3. Step 3

    Place a check mark in the box next to 'Turn off System Restore'.

  4. Step 4

    Click 'Apply'.

  5. Step 5

    Click the yes button on the pop up message that will result from step 4.

  6. Step 6

    Click 'Okay'

Tips & Warnings
  • To turn System Restore back on after running Norton, trojan removal tools, etc. follow the same exact steps with the exception of step 3. Uncheck this box instead.
