Instructions

Lightning is typically attracted to the tallest object in an area. If you are in an open area and you hear thunder, find a shelter immediately.

    • 2

The best place to be during a lightning storm is indoors. If you are caught outside in an active storm, try to get in your car and close all the windows.

    • 3

If you are caught in a lightning storm, remove your jewelry. The lightning is attracted to anything that is metal.

    • 4

Stay away from windows and doors during a lightning storm.

    • 5

Avoid using your phone if you hear thunder. Unplug your modem from your computer to avoid damage. A surge protector will not necessarily protect your equipment from a direct hit on nearby power lines.

Don't do the laundry, take a bath, or wash dishes during a lightning storm.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wait at least 30 minutes after the storm is finished before you go outdoors.

  • Never seek shelter under a tree.

  • Never lie on the ground during a lightning storm. Lightning can, and often does, travel across wet ground.
