How to Become an Insurance Salesman
-
1
Determine what kind of insurance you would like to sell. There are many different kinds, from life to health to auto. The various types are roughly grouped into two categories: Accident and Health, and Property and Casualty. Would you rather spend your days dealing with private individuals and discussing various tiers of health coverage they might buy, or would you rather market risk management and hedging products to business customers?

2
Determine your professional requirements. Each category of insurance typically has an educational course and a licensing exam. Many insurance salesmen become licensed in both categories of insurance. There is usually no general educational requirement, like a Bachelor's degree, but an impressive academic record could set you apart from the competition. The more knowledge you have of the industry in general, the better.

3
Talk to established insurance agents. Get their personal advice on the ins and outs of the business. Working with the veterans is not only important for the lessons you can learn, but it can also be a way to get plugged into their network of existing and prospective clients.
-
4
Become a good salesman--learn the art of selling. A good marketer is able to generate conversions in almost anything he sells. You obviously want to be an honest service provider and get your customers what they want, but remember that old-fashioned charm and solid salesmanship pay major dividends.
-
5
Work up to owning your own franchise. Insurance salesmen usually make the most money when they own their own office, typically a regional branch for a large multinational outfit. All the knowledge and the sales traits you acquired in becoming a proficient salesmen should help you once you're in a management position.
