Step 1
Keep your favorite lip products by using blending and layering techniques. For instance, if you just purchased a nude lipstick whose time to be tossed has not yet come, you can put it to good use by swiping a deeper color of gloss over it such as a red or mauve. You could also chop off a small piece of your lipstick and pre-blend it with a darker lip gloss or lipstick using a spatula on a palette to create a new product. This makes it fall-worthy and adds to your repertoire of looks.

Step 2
Purchase rich colors that flatter your skin tone. Don't blindly go with the trends. If the pros are saying that berry lip shades are big on the runway, find the berry lipstick or gloss that specifically brightens your face. You will know which one it is, because it flatters your face and features even if it is the only makeup you have on.
-
Step 3
Switch textures. It is not only through color that you can update your lip makeup--if you normally only wear gloss, consider wearing lipstick. At least try a lip-safe pigment that can be layered over a lip balm and under a lip gloss to give more substance to your lip look. On the other hand, if you regularly wear lipstick, try pairing deep-hued gloss with dramatic eyes to balance out and freshen up your look.

Step 4
Try metallics. You don't have to look like a disco diva for this to work. The products of today have a finer texture than those in the 70s. Metallics are more of a trend than a staple, so keep your lips from looking as though they're enslaved by fashion by applying only a light coat. Keep the rest of your face shimmer free if you want the most wearable look for everyday.

Step 5
Go monochromatic. For inspiration, pick a matching eyeshadow and blush that you like and get yourself a lipstick or gloss that is the same color as these but deeper and darker. Make sure to wear different tones of the color to give your look more dimension. Colors that especially have an autumn feel to them are mauves, berries, reds and rich browns.
