Things You'll Need:

  • Certification
  • RN
  1. Step 1

Obtain certification as an emergency medical technician. Work in the field as a certified EMT to gain exposure to critical trauma care, as well as the emergency, high-risk, crisis-driven environment of medicine and recitation.

  2. Step 2

Intern in an intensive care unit or trauma ward at a local hospital or level one trauma center. It is imperative that you establish a volunteer or work history in the area of emergency department and/or ICU/CCU. This preparatory, hands-on critical-care field work is set up as a general prerequisite for many accredited flight medic schools within the United States.

  3. Step 3

Earn an Associate Degree RN (two year program) from an accredited university. The first step toward a career as a flight medic is to receive admission to a two-year nursing program. The training, education and experience that you receive within the program will provide the necessary practical and academic framework for work in the field. Study diligently in order to exact a high GPA. This will increase your standing among applicants seeking admission to flight medic school. Upon the completion of the program you must earn an Associate Degree RN.

  4. Step 4

Study critical-care resources. Demonstrate a continued commitment to critical-care paramedic knowledge and critical-care transport. Knowing CAMTS guidelines and knowledge of FAR Part 135 is also necessary. It is important that you become licensed as a paramedic.

  5. Step 5

Find a flight medic school or certification program that compounds previous field study and university coursework with a program that offers certification through testing. Search your local library or online for a list of accredited schools, online courses and certificate programs.

  6. Step 6

Request an official application for entrance into the program. Included with the application, provide a list of all certifications, coursework and field experience. You must establish all prerequisite coursework, critical-care training and field work through the application process. To do so, provide a copy of all certifications, along with the name and location where you obtained your associate degree and transcript for your coursework. Because prerequisite qualifications vary from state to state and school to school, you will have to review each individual program or school for a complete listing. Sign and seal the application in an envelope, and mail it with the appropriate application fee.

Tips & Warnings
  • Train, train, train and then train some more. You will need to be comfortable in crisis-care treatment.
  • Be certain that you can perform in a high-risk, high-crisis environment.
