How to Change the Color Scheme in Windows XP

Changing the color scheme in Windows XP can drastically alter the look of the desktop. You can choose from a large variety of Windows-offered system schemes, or you can create your own custom colors. Once you have created your own custom color scheme, you can even name it and save it within the Windows system for quick recovery of the customized color.

      Minus all applications or press the "Windows" key, next to Alt key, and D at the same time, so you are able to view your desktop.

      Right-click on any blank spot on the desktop, and select "Properties".

      Select the "Appearance" tab, the green arrow, and click the drop-down arrow labeled "Color scheme:" Choose a scheme and click "OK". The scheme is now changed.

      Click "Advanced", the red arrow, to change individual colors or fonts. Follow the same steps as 1-3 to see how they look.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you click "Apply" instead of "OK", the scheme will change and the box stays open, in case you wish to further alter it.

  • There are custom schemes to download from the Internet if you search.

  • Some custom schemes may cause boxes or text not to show up in certain applications. Be prepared to experiment!
