How to Visit Massanutten Resort in the Fall
Massanutten Resort, located near Harrisonburg, Virginia, is a beautiful mountain resort, featuring exuberant foliage when the leaves turn colors in the fall. Massanutten features timeshare properties, which can be purchased for ownership or rented on a weekly basis. The resort also has hotel accommodations for the traveler on a budget. Massanutten Resort has many activities to keep the whole family occupied for a trip in autumn. Rent a hotel-type room at Massanutten, or stay in a timeshare condoniminium with 1 to 4 bedrooms and full or partial kitchens. To make reservations, contact Massanutten through their reservation line or by email (see Resources below).

Ride horses. You must make an advance reservation for riding horses, which can be done through their website or by calling Massanutten directly (see Resources for links to contact page). In September through November, horseback riding is available at five different times between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The tour guides will put you on certain horses based on your level of experience. An inexperienced rider will ride a much calmer, slower horse.

Check out the new indoor/outdoor waterpark. In the early fall, it may still be warm enough for you to enjoy the outdoor waterpark. Once it becomes cooler, the indoor waterpark has much to offer. One attraction is the Pipeline, which simulates surfing a wave. There are also water slides and a wave pool.

Take part in any of the weekly scheduled activities at Massanutten. Each week, Massanutten Resort puts out a weekly activity calendar. There are events for children and adults. In the fall you will find activities such as pumpkin carving and other crafts, dance lessons, and couples massage lessons.

Take a hike. For the budget traveler, hiking is free. Massanutten has many mountain trails where you can enjoy the fall foliage while breathing in the fresh air. The temperature is ideal for hiking, anywhere between 50 and 80 degrees F during the day in the fall. The sun sets between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Massanutten before the time change in November, so bring your camera on the hike to take some photography shots of the sunset from the top of the mountain with the colorful leaves on the trees in the forefront.

Drive to the local town of Harrisonburg. To see more of Virginia, take a 20 minute drive to Harrisonburg. In Harrisonburg, visit James Madison University or enjoy a meal. Two local restaurants to try are Calhoun's, located in the square of Harrisonburg, and Pano's Restaurant and Lounge, found on South Main Street.

Dine at Massanutten Resort. Massanutten added a few restaurants that surround the waterpark. Choose a restaurant with views into the waterpark, such as Snackers. Blue Ridge Buffet has country style food and views of the mountains. Or, stick with the older restaurant, the Woodstone Deli and Pizzeria, which has a tasty marinara sauce for the pasta and pizza.

Tips & Warnings
If you are on an extreme budget for your fall travel, Massanutten often offers timeshare presentations for their properties with free stays at the resort. The free nights do usually fall on weekdays, however.
Visit Massanutten just for the day instead of staying overnight. If you do, you will pay public admission prices for use of the golf course, waterpark, horseback riding and other activities. Go to the Massanutten website provided in the Resources to get an overview of the costs for such activities.
If you decide to view a timeshare to get a free hotel stay at Massanutten, realize that you may be spending a good part of the day viewing the timeshare. Although you are only supposed to be obligated for a certain duration, the presentation could take a longer period of time.
