Instructions

    • 1

Empty out some eggs by carefully pricking a hole in the bottom with a strong needle or small nail. Prick a larger hole on the top and start blowing from the bottom of the egg over a container to catch the raw egg. It will take a little effort, but the egg should blow out without too much difficulty. Rinse them with cold running water and set aside to dry.

    • 2

Peel the paper off all the crayons you wish to use and break them into pieces in a clean metal can. Do each color of crayon in a separate can. Set the cans in a large pot that has a few inches of water in it. Put the pot over low heat and wait for the crayons to melt. Once they have melted, the heat can be turned off, and then turned on again as needed to keep it hot.

    • 3

Pick away the opening of the eggs with a pair of tweezers until there is about an inch of space. Lower a 6-inch wick into the egg shell and carefully tape the extra to the side on the outside of the shell. Cover the bottom hole with a piece of tape and set the shell into an egg carton for a stable base.

    • 4

Carefully lift the first color of melted crayon out of the water and dry the outside of the can with a towel. Pour 2 tbsp. (approximately) of crayon wax into the first egg and move on to the next until all the eggs are done with their first layer. Set the can back in the hot water if you plan to continue using it. Wait 10 minutes.

    • 5

Lift the second color of melted crayons in the same way, drying the water off the outside and then pouring about 2 tbsp. into the egg shell. Continue with the rest of the eggs. Let them rest for 10 minutes and continue layering until all the eggs are filled.

    • 6

Let the crayon wax set for about an hour, or until there is no warmth left when you feel the outside of the shell. Peel the shell off of the candles and trim the wick carefully to about 1/2-inch long.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase wicks at craft stores or use the wick of an existing candle that was broken.

  • Get creative and pour several colors in at once for a swirled effect.

  • Add scented oils for fragrance.

  • Use scented crayons.

  • Always have an adult supervise in the melting of the crayons.
