A great craft idea, that you can do with the kids too!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pinecones
  • Peanut Butter or Lard
  • Bird Seed
  • Twine or string
  • Scissors
  • 2 bowls or large cups
  1. Step 1
    Pinecones, lard, seed, scissors, twine
    Pinecones, lard, seed, scissors, twine

Collect all your items together, and if you are including kid(s) in this project you might want to have them on old clothes and be ready to get a little messy.

  2. Step 2

Pour some seed into a cup or bowl.

  3. Step 3

If you want to use the peanut butter or lard for eating or cooking, be sure to put an amount for this project in another container. I like to just buy one container of lard or peanut butter for this project and keep it for making more in the future.

  4. Step 4

Cut Lengths of twine depending on how far you want them to hand from the tree,, I made mine about 5 inches.

  5. Step 5

Tie the twine around the top part of the pine cone.

  6. Step 6

Dip lower part of pinecone in the peanut butter or lard, giving it a slight twist to mash the lard into the pinecone.

  7. Step 7

Then dip the pinecone into the bird seed. When you have made however many you want, clean up and have fun picking out spots to hang these treats for your feathered friends.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you can do this outside, the birds make great cleaner uppers!
  • Don't leave any laying around if you can not hang them right away, HIDE THEM. I had squirrels carrying these away when I left some on my deck.
  • This can be a messy project, so plan accordingly.
  • For more fun for the kids (but more mess) try brushing the peanut butter onto the pinecones with paint brushes.
