Things You'll Need:
- Spray gun
- Air compressor (with regulator)
- Air hose and couplings
- Painter's tape
- Newspaper
- Paint
- Paint thinner
- Dry cloth
- Dust mask
- Empty container
-
Step 1
Before painting, clear the area of debris using a dry cloth. Apply painter's tape and newspaper to protect surfaces you don't want to paint. Cover your nose and mouth with a dust mask.
-
Step 2
Turn on the air compressor. Mix the paint and gather any other supplies needed while the air compressor builds up pressure. Air compressors with regulators are easier to control paint pressure so make sure the compressor you use has a regulator.
-
Step 3
Connect the air hose to the air compressor and the spray gun using the couplings provided. Adjust the regulator on the compressor to read between 12 and 25 PSI. The instructions that come with the spray gun will tell you how much pressure to use.
-
Step 4
Add paint thinner to the spray gun as per the spray gun instructions. Thinner will go into the paint cup, which is located at the bottom of the spray gun. Mix paint with a little paint thinner and put this mixture into an empty container. Paint needs to be thinner than usual because it must travel through the siphon and hose before it reaches the wall.
-
Step 5
Test the spray gun by squeezing the trigger. After a few seconds, the paint thinner should come out of the nozzle, along with air from the compressor. Remove excess paint thinner from the paint cup before adding paint.
-
Step 6
Fill the paint cup with paint (2/3 cups should be enough to start). To apply paint, make sure the spray gun is at least 8 inches from the area. Spray from left to right and maintain a steady motion. Refill the paint cup as needed until the area is completely painted.
