How to Find Work as an Adjunct Professor

Adjunct work, or temporary teaching positions at colleges and universities which usually only requires a master's degree, is common for young academics. But finding a decent appointment can be a difficult process, especially for those fresh out of graduate school. However, with some persistence and willingness to be flexible, you can gather enough assignments to hold you over until you find a long-term position, or to supplement your regular income. Regardless of your field, finding adjunct work requires the same kind of research.

Instructions

    • 1

Check job postings as often as possible. Higher Ed Jobs (link provided below) is a great resource for adjunct professors. It helps to check this site as well as other job posting outlets at least once a week.

    • 2

Write a number of different cover letters tailored to the various possible institutions you would consider working for. At the very least, have a letter aimed at community colleges, four year colleges and universities. You might also consider keeping letters aimed at selling yourself for specific courses as well, depending on your field and the type of courses usually taught by adjuncts.

    • 3

Send letters to institutions even if they have not advertised for adjunct openings. Departments often keep files of potential adjuncts in case the need arises.

    • 4

Cast a wide net. Be willing to apply to a number of places in a large geographical range. This will increase the likelihood of landing a course.

    • 5

Present yourself as a professional. Too often, people seeking adjunct work feel that they have to apologize for not having a regular teaching position. Avoid this at all costs as it will only make you look like a weak teaching candidate.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to group your courses into similar time periods and locations once you get them so that you are not spread too thin.
