How to Choose a Wedding DJ

A wedding DJ has a key role in the mood of your reception. A good master of ceremonies keeps the reception moving and keeps guests having fun. A bad disc jockey who doesn’t read the guests can ruin your reception. There are thousands of wedding entertainers out there -- pick the right one.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask friends and relatives for referrals. Don’t forget to ask your other wedding vendors for referrals. Your photographer and the reception hall manager should be familiar with the various DJs in the area.

  2. Step 2

Meet several DJs before making your decision. Consider their personalities and experience when making your decision. Try to see the DJ in action, if possible.

  3. Step 3

Ask the DJs about their equipment. Make sure they have professional grade gear and an extensive music database.

  4. Step 4

Call other people who have used this DJ for a wedding. Ask probing questions that allow the references to give honest answers.

  5. Step 5

Put a contract in place with your DJ. This should list the name of the actual DJ who will be at your reception, the charges (including any overtime charges), and the attire of the DJ for your reception.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the DJ can pronounce the names of all members in the wedding party who will be introduced at the start of the reception.
  • Give your DJ most of the control over song selection during the reception.
  • Trust in his experience as a DJ.
  • Make sure to give the DJ any special songs you would like played, as well as songs that you don’t want played (e.g., Chicken Dance, Macarena).
  • Keep the music as one of your highest priorities for the reception. The DJ has more control over the mood of your reception than most other items, including the flowers and cake.
  • Don’t be pressured into choosing a DJ who your friends or family knows. Get recommendations, but make sure you are comfortable with the DJ.

on 3/16/2009 I went with Diverse Sounds (http://www.diversesounds.com) for my Wedding DJ. If you’re anywhere in West Michigan, I would strongly suggest considering them for their disc jockey service. They even have an online submission form where you can outline exactly what it is that you’re looking for. Then they will contact you personally to make sure that you get exactly what you’re looking for out of your Wedding. Because of the experience of my wedding, my parents are looking forward to working with Diverse Sounds for their 35th Wedding Anniversary.
