Paper mache is really messy, which is why kids love it so much. There are a lot of things you can make out of paper mache, but making a ghost for Halloween is one of the easiest and most fun. Kids can do this project right next to their parents for a fun afternoon. Parents can make their own paper mache ghosts while showing their children how to make one. When you are done you can hang them from your ceiling fan for effect.

From Quick Guide: Paper Mache Basics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Balloon
  • Newspaper
  • Flour
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Mixing spoon
  • Scissors
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Google eyes
  • Pin
  1. Step 1

Create your glue mixture by using 1/2 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of water in a bowl. Mix thoroughly. Then add two more cups of boiling water and stir. Let sit until it is cool enough for you to stick your hands in the bowl without getting burned. Make sure the parent checks the temperature first.

  2. Step 2

Tear up your newspaper while you are waiting for the mixture to cool. These should be long strips no wider than 1 inch. You can tear them with your hands or cut them with a pair of scissors.

  3. Step 3

Blow up and tie off a balloon.

  4. Step 4

Dip your newspaper in the glue mixture and wipe off excess liquid. Wrap the strips around the balloon. You want to wrap up the whole balloon except for the bottom. Ghosts aren't round and don't have a bottom. When you have one layer completed set your balloon out to dry for the night.

  5. Step 5

Give your balloon another layer of paper mache and let it dry another night.

  6. Step 6

Give your balloon a third and final layer and again allow it to dry overnight.

  7. Step 7

Use a pin and pop the balloon out from the ghost.

  8. Step 8

Paint your ghost white. This may take two coats of paint. You will have to let the paint dry before going on to the next step.

  9. Step 9

Glue on some google eyes. You may also want to trim the bottom of your ghost if it isn't even. You can do this with a pair of scissors. Now you have a completed paper mache ghost.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't have google eyes you can just cut out two holes for the eyes.
