How to Choose Headphones

Having a good pair of headphones isn't just necessary for those who use a CD or MP3 player. They can be very valuable when you want to listen to your music or any audio program on your stereo or computer. This is why choosing the right pair of headphones is so important. You need headphones that will be perfect for each use, regardless of where you are when using them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin by determining how much you want to spend on headphones. Headphones can be as cheap as $15, or cost around $100, depending on what you want. Once you decide a maximum that you're willing to spend on headphones, you can begin to narrow your options.

  2. Step 2

Consider when you'll be using the headphones the most. This can help you determine which size headphones you should buy. Earbuds or smaller headphones may be a better choice if you're using them while walking or on the train while on your way to work. Larger headphones would be suitable for at-home use.

  3. Step 3

Determine whether or not you want your headphones to have “special features.” Some headphones have the ability to increase the bass you hear, while others are specifically made for blocking outside noises. Choosing headphones with these abilities will increase the cost of the headphones. These types of headphones, though, are usually better quality than a standard pair.

  4. Step 4

Find information on how long the headphones last. There's no point in spending $30 on a pair of headphones if they're going to “blow out” after 6 months.

  5. Step 5

Try different types of headphones before you buy them. It's a horrible feeling when you buy a pair of headphones and find out that you didn't make a good decision. Avoid this by previewing the headphones yourself. What sounds great to one person may not be up to your standards.
