The cornea is the lens and outer covering of your eye. Sometimes as people age, the cornea becomes opaque, resulting in blindness. Although there is no way to directly prevent corneal opacification, there are some things you can do to help avoid this difficult condition.

1. Be alert to changes in vision. Call a health professional if you notice any changes because there are things that doctors and surgeons can do to prevent permanent vision disabilities if the problem is reported quickly.

2. Be open to corneal transplants if your doctor suggests them. Although this seems like a highly intrusive and difficult surgery, corneal implants could save your vision. You would need to move quickly with this treatment, also.

3. Try special types of contact lenses. There are certain types of contact lenses designed to slow down or stop the opacification process. This is a less aggressive treatment than surgery, but for it works very well for some patients.

4. Don't wait too long to take measures. This is the most common mistake with this condition. If you get help right away, the prognosis is very good.
