How to Sew a Ruffle on Socks
Socks are a necessary part of everyday attire when wearing shoes other than flip flops and sandals. You can spice up some ordinary socks by adding a ruffle or two and even make a fashion statement. Ruffled socks are especially cute on little girls and babies. But instead of buying the high-priced designer ones, just make your own.

1
Choose the pair of socks you would like to add the lace trim to. Pick a lace trim that is preferably of a different color. You also want to make sure the lace is of an appropriate size and length for the size of the sock. You wouldn't use the same lace on an infant's socks as on a full grown woman's socks because the proportions would be awkward.

2
Unfold the sock so the neck of the sock (the part that goes up your leg) is flat. Choose a thread color that matches the color of the lace, not the sock. Thread your sewing machine with this thread. You'll want to use a thicker thread to combat the thickness of the elastic. A wire thread or husk thread works well.

Loosely wrap the lace around the neck of the sock. Cut the appropriate length. Place the lace at the top of the sock's neck so the lace details extend past the sock and the straight edge is near the edge of the sock. Pin the lace in place.

4
Sew the lace onto the neck of the sock using a simple stitch setting. You can sew it by hand with a needle and thread, but a machine provides a cleaner and more precise stitch line. Cut off any excess lace and finish off the ends. Fold the neck of the sock over when you are finished.
