Decoupage Halloween candles are perfect for decorating a mantle, table or other type of seasonal display. They are not only interesting conversation starters and fully functional candles, they also create a flickering glow that makes their decorations appear creepy and a little lifelike. These candles are simple to make and are a fun project to do with upper-elementary-age children and older.

Cut out the designs on the Halloween napkins. If you cut out ghosts or other white elements, make sure that you include their outlines in the cutout. All-white pieces will not show up on the candle. Good designs for these candles are haunted houses, jack-o-lanterns and monsters.

  2. Step 2

Mix glue and water together in the bowl. Your mixture should be about 1/2 glue, 1/2 water. It will be a cloudy, white color.

  3. Step 3
Use a soft, fluffy brush so you don't tear the paper napkin.

Brush some of the mixture on the candle where you want the design to be. You do not need to use much. This is just to hold the design in place while you decoupage it down.

  4. Step 4

Lay the design flat against the candle. Work in an area without drafts to make sure that your edges do not crumple or come up. If you have trouble getting the design to lay flat, start in the middle and gently pull it outward until it is spread out.

  5. Step 5

Brush glue over the design. This will hold the design in place and make it appear to have been painted on the candle. Start from the outside edges and work inward. The entire design will be saturated with the glue mixture when you are done. Be very gentle since the paper will become increasingly fragile the wetter it gets.

  6. Step 6

Let your candle dry for at least 24 hours. When it is lit, the area behind the designs will flicker in a spooky manner. Now you can make your own creepy Halloween candle display.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make a Halloween candle garden using several candles of different sizes, a flat glass plate and candy corn.
  • You can accent the designs with sequins or glitter glue if you wish, or tie an orange or black ribbon around the top of the candle.
