Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • visibility to see the signs
  1. Step 1

There are two major ways how to know if a car service car is legit. Now there are two types of taxi-cab service. The first is pretty obvious. In most cities it has a tall constructed lighting device on top of the car and have a standard color like green or yellow to represent the city. The other type is a particular type of car that different car services use like a Cadillac Seville. These are the ones that you need to know how to recognize if they are actually car service cars or not.

  2. Step 2

A car service car must have the words livery on the license or TLC. If it does not have these words on the license, it is not legal.

  3. Step 3

To know how a car service car is legit you have to see a diamond shape sticker on the windshield of the window on the passenger's side of the window. This sticker includes the state information on the vehicle and the expiration date of the license.

  4. Step 4

If you do not see these signs or one without the other, the car is not legal and could be a look alike car that someone maybe illegally using as a cab, the license may have been suspended or revoked and or it could just be someone trying to pick you up.

Tips & Warnings
  • A company is suppose to have its' drivers car inspected for these items before sending it out. Do not depend on this because many drivers are independents who do not leave their cars at a home station, but rather use their personal car as a car service through the company, so it is your responsibility to check the car before you get in it.
  • non-city car service is referred to as a gypsie cab in some major cities

on 8/21/2008 Wow, I am not from a city, so I virtually never use car service. We will be taking a trip to New York soon, however, so it is nice to know these tips.
