Step 1
Drive about twenty miles northeast of Charleston, Illinois. Walnut Point is accessible through Interstate 57 and U.S. Highway 36/ Walnut Point is located in Oakland, Illinois.

Step 2
Hike on the peaceful trails that are available at the park. There are 2.25 miles of trails that take you through the woods and wildlife of Walnut Point. There is also a three-mile exercise trail for joggers to take, too.

Step 3
Picnic near the lake area with your family and friends. You can also visit the concession stand that is available, too. You can choose from eight picnic tables located near the lake, eight large tables with a roof and five large shelters for bigger groups. If you have brought the children along, there is playground equipment a horseshoe pit.

Step 4
View the wildlife found at Walnut Point. There are plenty of birds for those who enjoy bird watching. See owls, songbirds, wood ducks, herons and Canadian Geese. The park is also filled with beautiful plant and tree life as well. Walk through the trails that are lined with ash, oak, hickory, maple, locust and sassafras trees. Drive along the roads to smell redbuds and wildflowers.

Step 5
Go fishing in the Embarras River. The lake has a variety of fish available for fisherman to catch. Fish for black crappie, channel catfish, redear sunfish, bluegill, largemouth bass, and brown bullhead in the Embarras River.

Contact the park office if you would like to hunt at Walnut Point. Hunting for deer, squirrel and raccoon is allowed.

Step 7
Bring your camper to the camping areas to spend the night in Walnut Point. There are electric hook-ups and bathrooms available that have showers and toilets. For those who like to "rough it," there are also areas for tents too. The camping areas are usually closed during the winter season.
