1. Determine your health care needs. Though the government mandates the coverage requirements of Medicare Supplemental Insurance policies, the policies do differ greatly. Some plans cover Medicare Part A deductibles; others do not. Some cover skilled nursing care; others do not. Think carefully about your needs before beginning the process.

2. Visit the Find and Compare Medicare Health Plans page on the Medicare website (see Resources below). This tool allows you to enter in your age, health status and zip code to find plans that are available. The site shows the premiums and coverage options for each plan.

3. Call (800) MEDICARE to speak with a professional who can help you through the process. Be open about your health status and monthly budget.

• If you have had a break in your insurance coverage, you may have a waiting period before Medigap plans will cover preexisting condition expenses. If you have not had continuous coverage, call (800) MEDICARE and ask a professional what that means for you.
