How to Write a Letter to a Celebrity

How to Write a Letter to a Celebritythumbnail
Learn how to communicate with your favorite celebrity.

Do you have a favorite music or movie star that you would like to contact to ask questions, request a photograph or autograph, or just to say "I loved your last film"? If you write to the right location, you will most likely get a response.

Once you send out your letter, be patient. You are not the only one contacting the celebrity. Some stars return their mail right away, but others may take weeks or even months. Most often, it will take up to six weeks before you hear anything. Since the celebrities need your continued interest to remain popular, almost everyone gets a response sooner or later.

    Things You'll Need

    • Envelopes
    • Stamps
    • Index cards

Search online for your celebrity's mailing address. You can find fan mail addresses for actors and actresses as well as singers, athletes, politicians, musicians and authors on many websites. The celebrity can be very well known or even long forgotten. Most of the websites have biographies and photographs of the person, as well as their address, so you can make sure you are sending your letter to the right person.

Carefully type your letter, or print it very neatly, and specifically make your autograph request or write your comments. Make sure your envelope includes the entire address as noted online, your return address and correct postage.

Inside the envelope include a self-addressed stamped 9-by-12 envelope. Put your address on this envelope as well as two or three stamps to cover mailing costs.

Send a picture of the person you are contacting along with your letter to get a photo signed. Since some celebrities do not normally send photos, this will help ensure that you will get a signed photo. You can find a picture of the person in a magazine or print out a good quality picture from the Internet.

Send two or three index cards along with your letter for extra autographs to give to friends. Most celebrities will sign up to three items--a photo and two cards. Do not send any more. That is asking for too much!

Do not just ask for an autograph or photo. Let the celebrity know something you liked about his last movie or her music. Remember, these people are human beings, too, and want to hear good things about themselves. If there is something you do not like about the person, be polite. There is a proper and improper way of disagreeing with someone.

If you can't think of what to write, read about the person online or in a magazine. Then send some comments about what you read. If it is someone who is involved with politics, give your thoughts or suggestions about a certain issue.
