How to Clean a Black Car

Black cars look great when they are clean.

Although stunning when clean, black cars are notorious for showing even the smallest bit of dirt or dust. Black cars are also more prone to streaking and swirling in the paint. The slightest paint imperfection can appear as a major eyesore on a black car. The secret to washing a black car is not to scratch the paint or leave any soap or debris behind. Getting in the habit of washing a black car properly will help keep it looking good longer.

Things You'll Need

• 2 large buckets
• Mild car wash solution
• Garden hose with adjustable spray nozzle
• 2 Sheep skin mitts
• Synthetic chamois
• Micro fiber cloth
• Tar remover

Instructions

1. Park the car in a shaded area. Avoid direct sunlight and high heat. If possible, wash the car in the evening right before sundown.

2. Fill one bucket with plain water. Add 1/4 cup car wash solution to the other bucket and then fill with water.

3. Rinse the car using a light fan spray. Spray lightly so the dirt does not scratch the paint. The goal is to loosen the dirt, not grind it in. Remove any tar stains with a commercial tar remover.

4. Dip a sheep skin mitt into the soapy solution. Wash a small area of the car being careful not to rub too hard. When the solution starts to become dirty, empty the bucket and mix a fresh batch. Wash the tires and bumpers last.

5. Dip the second sheep skin mitt into the bucket with plain water. Carefully rinse the soap off the section you just washed. When the water starts to become cloudy, empty the bucket and refill it with clean water.

6. Quickly dry the car and windows using a chamois, and then follow up with a micro fiber cloth. Polish the car with the micro fiber cloth using circular motions. If you drop the chamois or cloth, don't use it again until you clean it, to avoid scratching the paint.

Tips & Warnings

• Keep a clean micro fiber cloth in the car to remove dust between washes. Do not try to remove mud, dirt or other substances.
