An FTP server, or File Transfer Protocol server, is a fast and easy way to share files. It can be configured for an intranet or the Internet, as a public server open for anonymous access. FTP is an industry standard so your FTP server will allow access to a computer running any operating system, provided it has an FTP client installed. Windows 2003 requires Internet Information Services, or IIS, installed along with the FTP service. Installation is required because these services are not installed automatically by the manufacturer.
