How to Create Bird Seed Patties

Each patty is chock-full of nutty goodness that birds will enjoy little by little throughout the day. These birdseed patties are a great solution to feeding birds during snowfall, when scattering seed gets quickly covered by snow.

- 1-1/2 cups quick rolled oats
- 2 cups boiling water
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 3/4 cup vegetable shortening
- 1/2 cup birdseed
- 1 cup yellow cornmeal
- 1 cup cream of wheat (not instant)
- 1/3 cup dried cranberries

In a large saucepan, heat the water to boiling, then add the oats. Stir constantly for 3 minutes or until very thick. Remove from heat.

Stir in the peanut butter and shortening until melted. Add the remaining four ingredients and mix completely. Allow the mixture to cool.

Shape the birdseed into large patties, one handful at a time. The recipe should make at least 12 patties. Refrigerate until hard.

Store the patties in resealable storage bags, and they can be frozen as well. Throw out one patty at a time for the birds to feed on.
