Step 1
Contact the Canadian Fitness Education Services about their education courses. The CFES is the primary source for fitness education courses in Canada.

Step 2
Take the CFES Fitness Knowledge course. This course will lay the foundation for each subsequent level of learning in the fitness industry. It is accepted as a prerequisite course for future fitness instruction courses.

Step 3
Take the Canadian National Fitness Leadership Alliance theory examination. This is the national fitness exam, which shows that you have the required knowledge to become a certified fitness trainer.

Ensure you have up-to-date qualifications in First Aid, as well as a current insurance policy that has comprehensive coverage. This is important to have in case of issues of liability.

Step 5
Gain certification in the Instructor Competency Program—this requires the candidate to perform a number of classes under a qualified supervisor, who will then decide on your competency to certification. This certification is generally renewed annually or biannually through your provincial governing board.
