Things You'll Need:
- Tables or sheets
- Pricing labels
- Money box or bag
-
Step 1
Organize the mess. You're going to have to tackle the garage or attic before you can put anything out for sale, so you might as well suck it up and get it done. One way to cut down on some of the time you spend working on putting your yard sale together is to organize as you clean. Try to make piles based on how you want to lay it out for the sale.
-
Step 2
Price your items. Most drugstores have yellow stickers that you can use for pricing your items. You will want to price everything beforehand, just in case someone tries to take advantage of you during a busy part of the sale. Remember that this is a yard sale, so have a rock bottom price in mind for each item when customers want to negotiate.
-
Step 3
Advertise your sale. Many radio stations will post your yard sale for free on their website, or you may be able to write a few lines for your local newspaper. A few days before the sale, place signs at both ends of your street pointing customers to your yard sale. Make sure you use large, brightly-colored signs and large print, so people can see your signs from the road.
-
Step 4
Set up for the big day. Set up tables - or sheets if you don't have enough tables - to set up your items. Try to organize clothes in one area, figurines in another, books in a box. Clothes are best displayed if you can find a way to hang them on a clothesline or tree branch. Also, make sure that prices are easy to see.
-
Step 5
Bring a money box or bag. Before your big sale, you will need to head to the bank to get rolls of change, especially quarters. Most people who shop yard sales are going to shop with change, so you will want to be ready. Make sure you also have about $50 in one dollar bills. You will want to have either a money box or a money bag that you can keep with you at all times to hold your money.
-
Step 6
Ask for help. A yard sale can be an easy way to get conned, so ask a friend or family member to help you keep track of customers. If you get busy with a few people at a time, it will be easier for someone to simply take something off your table while your attention is diverted. It's also a good way for someone to steal some of the cash from your money box. Protect yourself by working as a team.

on 10/10/2008 Awesome tips. Garage sales, yard sales, and ebay are all awesome places to unload something you no longer want but that someone SOMEWHERE will pay good money to have clutter up their own home. It's always amazing what people will pay good money for :-)
